Sustainable Development Goals at Clarkson – Environmental Responsibility

Sustainability has long been a pillar within Clarkson University, woven into the curriculum and extracurricular activities in an effort to better the perspectives and expertise within its faculty and student body. For the past ten years, the university has taken a crosswalk approach under the leadership of President Anthony G. Collins, meeting sustainability goals through classroom instruction, student projects and strategic initiatives.

Now, the university is taking the initiative a step further by making the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, which span social, economic, ecological and energy, part of the long-term strategic planning process. Over the next month we will be highlighting the SDGs at Clarkson University through outreach campaigns, workshops, and events.

This week we are focusing on SDGs that emphasize environmental responsibility.  Look for our TV screens and facebook posts that help to celebrate our leaders in these areas.

#7 Affordable and Clean Energy: 100% of the electricity Clarkson purchases is from renewable sources, supplied from a power purchase agreement with Brookfield.

#13 Climate Action: ISE Director Sue Powers attended the 2021 UN Climate Talks in Glasgow. She was invited for her work educating the New York Power Authority on the decarbonization of the grid.

#14 Life Below Water: Qingran Li, Assistant Professor of Economics & Financial Studies, focuses her research on marine resource studies. One of her recent papers developed a bioeconomic model to analyze the long-run supply of fish, like the Bluefin Tuna.

#15 Life on Land: Clarkson is working to rewild campus. The Meadow Restoration project will target parts of campus to be mowed less, have flowers planted, and have birdhouses added.
