Clarkson University Associate Professor of Computer Science Alexis Maciel has received the Outstanding Advisor Award for 2020.
Maciel, who previously received the award in 2009, was chosen for the honor by students via advisor evaluation results from the previous fall and spring semesters.
“I’m very happy to be receiving this award, especially since it is based on student feedback,” said Maciel.
But Maciel is not the only member of his family being honored at Clarkson this year. In fact, every member of his immediate family has been recognized with awards.
His wife, Lorraine Harper, an administrative assistant in the Department of Communication, Media & Design, received a Phalanx Commendable Service Award, which is not her first service award.
Their daughter, Claire Maciel, a senior majoring in interdisciplinary liberal studies and communication with a concentration in gender and sexuality studies, received the Graduating Senior Communication Award.
And their son, Patrick Maciel, a first-year student majoring in communication, received the Bill Cotter Media Award.
“It’s great that we’re all receiving awards this year,” said Maciel. “I’m very proud of the three of them.”
“We are very proud to be part of the Clarkson family — right now, more than ever,” added Harper.
Outstanding faculty advisors of undergraduate students have been recognized with the Outstanding Advisor Award since 1979.
“I find it deeply rewarding to help students with the decisions they face,” said Alexis Maciel. “The relationships that I build with these students mean a lot to me.”
Maciel teaches courses on software development, algorithms and data structures, and the theory of computation. His research interests are mostly in the area of computational complexity, especially proof complexity and circuit complexity.
His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the FRQNT (formerly FCAR), a Québec governmental agency that supports research and new generations of researchers in natural sciences and engineering.
A native of Montréal, Maciel received his Ph.D. in computer science from McGill University. He joined Clarkson in 1997 after postdoctoral appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was also affiliated with the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.
