Sustainable Development Goals at Clarkson – Quality of Life

Sustainability has long been a pillar within Clarkson University, woven into the curriculum and extracurricular activities in an effort to better the perspectives and expertise within its faculty and student body. For the past ten years, the university has taken a crosswalk approach under the leadership of President Anthony G. Collins, meeting sustainability goals through classroom instruction, student projects and strategic initiatives.

Now, the university is taking the initiative a step further by making the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, which span social, economic, ecological and energy, part of the long-term strategic planning process. Over the next month we will be highlighting the SDGs at Clarkson University through outreach campaigns, workshops, and events.

This week we are focusing on SDGs that work toward an increased quality of life.  Look for our TV screens and facebook posts that help to celebrate our leaders in these areas.

#1 No Poverty: The Covid Emergency Relief Fund: The office of the Dean of Students has resources to aid food insecurity, basic needs, travel costs, medical bills, etc.

#2 Zero Hunger: Clarkson’s food pantry, led by the Honor’s Program, provides food to students in need.

#3 Good Health and Well-being: Ali Boolani, Assoc. Professor in Physical Therapy, focuses his research on health and well-being. Boolani completed a study showing just 6 minutes of walking can increase a person’s motivation to perform physical activity.

#6  Clean Water and Sanitation: Dr. Shane Rogers and Clarkson’s Engineers for International Sustainability chapter traveled to Uganda to work with a community to install a solar powered water pump.
