Clarkson University Professor Lisa Legault has been awarded the Clarkson Award for Excellence in Research & Scholarship.
The Clarkson Award for Excellence in Research & Scholarship is granted annually to recognize research by a tenured faculty member who has had a significant impact on his or her chosen field of study.
Legault is an associate professor of psychology at Clarkson. She is a social psychologist who studies the motivational foundations of prosocial behavior – particularly as applied to inclusive and nondiscriminatory social behavior and sustainable environmental behavior.
At Clarkson, Legault teaches classes in motivation & emotion, research methods, and statistics, and is the creator and director of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Professional Experience for undergraduates.
Her research integrates motivation science, prejudice and intergroup relations, and social cognitive neuroscience. Her expertise is in human motivation and self-control, with a focus on how motivational and emotional processes influence the expression and control of social biases, such as prejudice. She also studies how the brain underlies self-control, examining neurophysiological sensitivity to response conflict and lapses or errors of self-regulation.
Legault has published 24 peer-reviewed research articles, including in top-ranking journals such as Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and most recently, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Since joining Clarkson in Fall 2012, 16 of her undergraduate students have co-authored peer-reviewed articles with her. She has also authored 10 book chapters and presented her research at more than 70 national and international conferences, including two keynote addresses. In 2020, she won the teacher scholar award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Her work has been cited more than 3000 times and her papers on human motivation have been downloaded almost 400,000 times. She is also executive editor for the Journal of Social Psychology and a reviewer for more than 30 academic journals.
Legault received her bachelor of social science degree and her Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa, and was awarded a Research Council of Canada Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Laboratory for Social Neuroscience at the University of Toronto before coming to Clarkson in 2012.
